Вещание некоммерческих радио- и телевизионных станций, осуществляемое за счет средств, собранных среди слушателей и зрителей, пожертвований коммерческих компаний и дотаций из средств федерального бюджета (значительно сократившихся после 1982). Общественное вещание начиналось в 1950-60-е, финансировалось Фондом Форда [ Ford Foundation], а также за счет нерегулярных бюджетных дотаций. После принятия Конгрессом в 1967 Закона об общественном вещании [Public Broadcasting Act of 1967] была создана сеть станций (ныне свыше 300) по всей стране (например, WETA в Вашингтоне, KQED в Сан-Франциско, WGBH в Бостоне и WNET в Нью-Йорке) и две управленческие структуры с дублирующимися и взаимно дополняющими функциями: "Паблик бродкэстинг сервис" [ Public Broadcasting Service] и Корпорация общественного вещания [Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)]. Как правило, такое вещание включает образовательные передачи, которые идут без рекламы, но в конце программы сопровождаются призывами вносить средства на их финансирование.
